3.3.14 Generative AI (GenAI) in Teaching and Learning
Resources related to the role and use of generative AI in teaching and learning at the University are available on the Provost’s Office GenAI page. These include Guidance for Faculty & Students about the use of this technology, as well as resources – developed or curated by UVA faculty and staff– designed to enable instructors to make informed decisions about whether to permit its use by students and whether (and how) to incorporate it into their teaching. The Center for Teaching Excellence’s (CTE) Generative AI in Teaching and Learning Teaching Hub offers numerous related resources.
Through the Faculty AI Guides, a joint program of the Provost’s Office and the CTE, faculty members undergo training about this technology as it relates to teaching and learning, share their knowledge with colleagues through informal workshops or presentations, and serve as ongoing resources for their colleagues.
In March 2026, the Executive Vice President and Provost charged a Committee on Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning to advise on policy, pedagogy, the future of work, and the responsible and ethical use of AI. Various initiatives and pilots are featured on the Provost’s AI@UVA site, including an online course for faculty on teaching in a world with generative AI, an AI Literacy and Action Lab organized by the University Library and Arts & Sciences, and an AI for Academic Excellence student toolkit developed by a McIntire School faculty member.
Recognizing the evolution of academics due to the widespread availability of AI, the student-run Honor Committee has articulated its stance and outlined work with its Faculty Advisory Committee to preserve integrity in a community of trust.
Information on licensed generative AI tools available for use at the University is found on the UVA Information Technology Services website. The UVA ITS website also includes Responsible Use Guidelines and Terms of Use for generative AI tools at the University.
